Chihuahua Al PacíFico


The Chihuahua al Pacífico Railroad, known as ChP or "Chepe", is a major rail line in northwest Mexico, linking the city of Chihuahua, Chihuahua, to the town of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, near the Pacific coast. It runs 650 km (400) miles, passing through the Copper Canyon, a beautiful and rugged series of canyons that have led some to call this the most scenic railroad trip on the continent. The idea for the railroad was officially started in 1880, when the president of Mexico, General Manuel González, granted a rail concession to of Albert Kinsey Owen of the Utopia Socialist Colony of New Harmony, Indiana, USA, who was seeking to develop a socialist colony. Financial difficulties, spurred by the cost of building a railroad through the rugged canyons, plagued the project, and it was not until 1961 that the ChP was completed. In 1998, the private rail franchise Ferromex took over the railroad from the Mexican government, which had operated all railroads since 1940. In general, two trains run daily: one a slightly slower service with more stops for locals, and one a direct, more expensive service for tourists. Cerveza Pacífico is a pilsner originally brewed in Mazatlán, Mexico. The name means Pacific Beer. The picture on the bottle is the Deer Islands off the coast of Mazatlán surrounded by a lifesaver.

    Don Pacifico


    Don Pacifico became famous in 1850 as the trigger of a notorious international incident. Pacifico was a Portuguese Jew who had been born in Gibraltar. It was this claim to British citizenship that was the cause of the incident. He had been living in Greece for a period of time, owning some property and running a business. In 1847 Pacifico's business was attacked and vandalised. He appealed to the Greek government for compensation for his injury. When the Greek government was not forthcoming with assistance he appealed in 1848 to the British government for support. Lord Palmerston was the foreign secretary at this time and he took unilateral action in support of Pacifico. He sent the Royal Navy to Greece to blockade Greek ports and threaten Greek shipping. The blockade lasted 2 years, and caused great tensions with France and Russia. The affair ended only when the Greek government agreed to compensate Pacifico, after Greek ships were seized by the Royal Navy. Palmerston received a great deal of criticism from both foreign powers and domestic politicians. Queen Victoria was also said to be "not amused". However, Palmerston made an impassioned speech defending his actions before the House of Commons in which he compared the British Empire to the Roman Empire. Where a Roman citizen could say "Civis Romanus Sum" or, "am I not a citizen of Rome" and demand the full protection of the Roman Empire.     Universidad del Pacífico (UP) is a private university in Lima, Peru. The university is specialized in Business Management and Economics, and is regarded as the best Peruvian university in these fields. The Universidad del Pacífico was established in 1962 by a group of businessmen, with help from the Society of Jesus. Its current campus is located in Jesús María.
