Goggles
Goggles or safety glasses are a form of protective eyewear that usually enclose the eye area to prevent particulates or chemicals from striking the eyes. They are used in chemistry laboratories and in woodworking. They are often used in snow sports as well, and in swimming. Goggles are often worn when using power tools such as drills or chainsaws to prevent flying particles from damaging the eyes. Many types of googles are available as prescription eyewear for those with vision problems.
The requirements for goggles varies depending on the use. Some examples:
Swimming: Must be watertight to prevent water, such as salt water when swimming in the ocean, from irritating the eyes or blurring vision. Allows swimmers to see clearly underwater.
Power tools: Must be made of an unbreakable material that prevents chunks of metal, wood, plastic, concrete, and so on from hitting or piercing the eye. Usually has some sort of ventilation to prevent sweat from building up inside the goggles and fogging the surface.
Motorcycle riding and other open-air activities: Prevents insects, dust, and so on from hitting the eyes.
Laboratory: Combines impact resistance with side shields to prevent chemical splashes reaching the eyes. May also include laser protection.
Racquetball: Protect the eyes from racquets swinging in an enclosed area and from impact from hard rubber ball.
Snow sports: Protect the eyes from glare and from icy particles flying up from the ground.
Several NBA players have worn goggles during play, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy and Horace Grant.
Fictional context
In anime, goggles (or sunglasses) worn or kept on the forehead/headgear by a character are a sign of decisiveness, bravery, or leadership position. This may have been inspired by the aviators of old, or by historical figures such as George Patton or Erwin Rommel. Such characters are commonly known as "Goggleboys" or "Gogglegirls".

Beer Goggles Beer goggles is a slang term for a phenomenon in which one's consumption of alcohol makes physically unattractive people appear beautiful. The term is often associated with the awkward experience of waking up the following morning to discover that the person lying next to you is less attractive than you had previously believed ( coyote ugly).
In an episode of The Simpsons, Selma takes Bart and Lisa to the Duff beer theme park, and beer goggles were for sale in the gift shop. They promised to let you "see the world through the eyes of a drunk". Bart tried on a pair, and looked up to see an amazingly sexy woman. It was really his aunt.
Some police departments also have literal beer goggles, which distort vision to an approximation of drunkenness. These are used in education programs to teach people, often teenagers, about the danger of drunk driving.

Night vision goggles are a type of eye-wear that allows one to see in the dark. They are most often used by the military.
Night vision goggles are one of two types. One type of night vision goggles pick up any light in the given area and amplify it several thousand times. This type is commonly used for war reporting, tinting the picture green. The color green is chosen because the human eye is most sensitive and able to discern the most shades in that color. The other common type of night vision goggles are heat-sensing/infrared goggles. These show anything that emits normal heat radiation in the given area.
There are currently goggles that combine both of these technologies to create images that are almost as clear as day. In addition to goggles, night vision technology is also used in rifle scopes, security cameras, binoculars, etc.
Night vision goggles work by the photo-electric effect. As a photon collides with a detector plate, multiple electrons are ejected from the metal that are then amplified by a series of electron ejections onto a phosphorus screen.
