Heating Vent

Vent

A vent can refer to:
  • A volcano. (also commonly a term for a deep sea vent)
  • An outlet of a biological ventilation system that allows the exchange of air; ''see gas exchange''
  • An external opening of a urinary or genital system in lower vertebrates (eg - salamanders)
  • The discharge from a combustion chamber; ''see chimney''

    Hydrothermal Vent

A hydrothermal vent is a fissure in a planet's surface from which geothermally heated water issues. Hydrothermal vents are commonly found in places that are also volcanically active, where hot magma is relatively near the planet's surface. Hydrothermal vents are abundant on Earth because it is both geologically active and has large amounts of water on its surface. Common land types include hot springs, fumaroles and geysers. The most famous hydrothermal vent system is probably Yellowstone National Park in the United States. Submarine hydrothermal vents (black smokers) were discovered in 1977. Despite their inaccessible location on ocean floors, many have been thoroughly mapped and explored. Relative to the majority of the deep sea, the areas around hydrothermal vents are biologically productive, often hosting complex communities fueled by the chemicals dissolved in the vent fluids. Chemosynthetic archaea form the base of the food chain, supporting diverse organisms, including giant tube worms, clams, and shrimp. The water that issues from hydrothermal vents consists mostly of ground water that has percolated down into hot regions from the surface, but it also commonly contains some portion of primordial water that originated deep underground and is only now surfacing for the first time. The proportion varies from location to location. Hydrothermal vents have been speculated to exist on Mars, and are believed to exist on Europa.

    Red-Vented Cockatoo

The Red-vented Cockatoo, ''Cacatua haematuropygia'', sometimes called the Philippine Cockatoo, is a cockatoo roughly the size and shape of the Goffin's Cockatoo. It is easily distinguished by the red feathers around the vent. It is endemic to the Philippines where small populations exist on the islands of Palawan, Tawitawi, Mindanao and Masbate. The Red-vented Cockatoo makes a characteristic bleating call, as well as screeching or whistling noises that are common to most cockatoos. It is quieter than most cockatoos, and much quieter than the Umbrella Cockatoo or Moluccan Cockatoo.

    Status

This bird is critically endangered. Populations have decreased dramatically due to illegal trapping for the cage-bird trade. The high price fetched per bird (c.US$160 in Manila in 1997) means that chicks are taken from virtually every accessible nest. Loss of habitat may also have contributed to its decline. The current population is estimated at less than 4000 birds.
