Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are a National Football League team based in Baltimore, Maryland. In some accounts there is confusion over the history of the Baltimore Ravens. This is due to the unusual and unprecedented actions taken by the city of Cleveland, Ohio and the National Football League following the relocation of the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore in 1996. Browns owner Art Modell decided to move the team to Baltimore citing the condition of the old and decrepit Cleveland Stadium and the lack of a sufficient replacement. A deal worked out by the league for Browns fans stipulates that the team name, colors, and history of the franchise were to remain in Cleveland. For that reason, past records and Hall of Fame players are attributed to the Cleveland Browns and not to the Baltimore Ravens. See the Franchise History entry for the Cleveland Browns for full details of the move. :Founded: 1996. :Home field: M&T Bank Stadium (formerly PSInet Stadium and Ravens Stadium) :Previous home field: Memorial Stadium (1996-1997) :Uniform colors: Black, Purple, Metallic Gold, and White. From the Browns to the Orioles

The modern Orioles can trace their franchise link back to the Milwaukee Brewers of the Western League, who in 1902 became the St. Louis Browns of the fledgling American League. Half a century of sub-par baseball and the existence of two major league teams in St. Louis - the AL Browns and the NL Cardinals - eventually forced Browns majority owner Bill Veeck to consider moving his franchise. Just before World War II, the Browns came close to moving to Los Angeles, nearly two decades before big league baseball eventually arrived in California. During the war, the Browns won their only St. Louis based American League pennant in 1944, but they faced their local rivals, the more successful Cardinals,

Baltimore Ravens

I don't agree with the shift of Cleveland Browns content to the Cleveland Browns page. The old Browns and current Ravens are linearly the same franchise, with the same owner and carrying over much of the same management structure and player personnel. The new Browns are an expansion team with new owners and personnel. As is correctly pointed out, the current franchise owns the old trademarks and stuff, but that's not relevant; it's like saying that Michael Jackson was a Beatle because he now owns the rights to the old Lennon-McCartney songs. Willing to be persuaded; otherwise, would recommend switching it back. -- RjLesch I am inclined to agree. While it is true that the NFL decided to transfer the teams history, the fact remains that the Baltimore Ravens were not an expansion team. They had the same players, coaches, and management as the old Browns, and it is they new Browns that are the true expansion team. Jeff8765 15:42, Jan 24, 2005 (UTC)
  • But currently, the NFL and all its official records technically treats the Baltimore Ravens as an 1996 expansion team who just got same players, coaches, and management as the old Browns. The Browns are treated like the team suspended operations from 1996-1998. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 05:40, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

    David Baltimore

David Baltimore (born March 7, 1938) is an American biologist and a winner of the 1975 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Baltimore was born in New York City. A graduate of Swarthmore College (BA, 1960), he received his Ph.D. from Rockefeller University in 1964. At the age of 37, while on the MIT faculty, he received the Nobel Prize for the discovery of reverse transcriptase, which transcribes RNA into DNA. This work upset what was until the early 1970s a widely held dogma: that DNA led to RNA, which in turn led solely to proteins. Reverse transcriptase is an important factor in the reproduction of retroviruses such as HIV. Also while at MIT, Baltimore established the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. He was an organizer of the Asilomar conference on recombinant DNA in 1975. For most people outside of science, Baltimore is best known for his role in an affair of alleged scientific misconduct. In 1986, Baltimore had co-authored a scientific paper on immunology with Thereza Imanishi-Kari and others. After Imanishi-Kari was accused of fabricating data, Baltimore initially refused to retract the paper although he did later. Since the research had been funded by the U.S. federal government through the National Institutes of Health, the matter was taken up by the United States Congress, where it was aggressively pursued by, among others, Representative John Dingell. Due to the ensuing controversy, in 1991 Baltimore was forced to resign from the presidency of Rockefeller University, to which he been appointed only one year earlier. In 1996, an expert panel appointed by the federal government cleared Imanishi-Kari of misconduct. Baltimore has profound influence on national policy in matters concerning recombinant DNA research and the AIDS epidemic. Baltimore was appointed president of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1997.
