    :''This article is about the 1965 movie. ''The Incubus'' is the title of an unrelated 1981 film starring John Cassavetes.'' ''Incubus'' is a black and white horror film originally released in 1965 and later restored in 2001. ''Incubus'' was directed by Leslie Stevens, creator of ''The Outer Limits'', and stars a pre-''Star Trek'' William Shatner. Its striking black and white cinematography was by Conrad Hall, who later went on to win two Academy Awards for his work on the films ''Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'' and ''American Beauty''. The story is about a succubus who falls in love with a deeply religious soldier (Shatner) she intended to seduce. Outraged by this, her sister summons their leader, a devilish incubus (Milos Milos), who rapes the soldier's sister and attempts to kill him. The film was performed entirely in the constructed language Esperanto. This was done to create an eerie, other-worldly feeling, and the director has prohibited dubbing into other languages. The film was lost for many years, the original print of the film burned in a fire and all copies reported lost, destroyed, or worn away. A copy of the film was found in France where it played, with French subtitles, in a small movie house. The Sci-Fi Channel funded the restoration from the found print and released a DVD in 2001 that included subtitles in English and French. Because the source print contained subtitles in French, the English subtitles are placed over black bars that partially obscure some portions of the frame. Most English speakers have given the film good ratings and reviews, likening it to the work of Ingmar Bergman, while Esperanto speakers are generally disappointed by the actors' dreadful pronunciation - in particular, Shatner's dialogue was delivered with a very noticeable French accent. Incubus is an eclectic rock band, that consists of five men from Calabasas, California: Brandon Boyd (vocals and percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Ben Kenney (bass), Jose Pasillas (drums) and DJ Kilmore (turntables). Former members of the band include DJ Lyfe (turntables) and Alex Katunich (a.k.a. Dirk Lance) (bass). The band needed to think of a name hours before their first show. After a few failed choices, Mike looked in a thesaurus and chose "Incubus" almost at random. An incubus is a type of demon. Mike says that the name was chosen because it sounded silly; Brandon holds that it was chosen because they were teenagers and the definition had the word "sex" in it.

    Early Career

    Jose Pasillas, Alex Katunich, Mike Einziger began jamming together while at Calabasas High School in 1990. They mostly played Metallica and Megadeth covers and were able to get a few gigs at friend's parties. They asked their friend, Brandon Boyd to join and he became the vocalist. At this time they began writing their own music. In 1991, after adopting the name Incubus, the band began playing at parties in their neighborhood. For the next few years, Incubus continued to play live and write music, which cumulated in their first demo recording released in 1994, titled ''Closet Cultivation''. One song of interest from this demo was "Bathe In My Snot", which harnessed much of the band's newly created energy. On January 7, 1995, the demo tape ''Incubus'' was released, featuring songs that would later appear on their first album, ''Fungus Amongus'', and their EP, ''Enjoy Incubus''. On November 1, 1995, ''Fungus Amongus'' was released on the band's own label,''Stopuglynailfungus Music on Chillum''. An imaginary land, called Nomen Tuumen, is home to a well which is reported to have mystical healing powers. Sufferers make the pilgrimage to this well hoping to drink its magical water. At the same time, beautiful demons lurk near the well hoping to capture the corrupt souls who flock there. A wounded soldier (William Shatner) comes to the well with his saintly sister. They are too good for the demons to hunt, but one inexperienced demon thinks she can and a battle between good and evil erupts. Incubus is the first movie filmed entirely in Esperanto. It also received glorious acclaim at film festivals in San Francisco and Paris in 1965. Shortly after those screenings, the negative and all prints were destroyed and the film was lost to the world. Recently, a print was discovered in the archives of the Cinematheque Francaise, and it has been been restored and made available on video. In Western medieval legend, an incubus (plural ''incubi''; from Latin ''incubare'', "to lie upon") is a demon in male form supposed to lie upon sleepers, especially on women in order to have sexual intercourse with them. A female version was called a succubus. There are several possible explanations for the incubus legends:
  • They form part of the well-attested Medieval preoccupation with sin, especially sexual sins of women.
  • Actual rapes of sleeping women were attributed to demons by rapists in order to escape punishment.
  • The feeling of smothering while sleeping is known to physicians. The modern term for this common disorder is Sleep paralysis or sleep apnea.
  • Because of the weight given to sexual sin in the Middle Ages, nocturnal arousal, orgasm or nocturnal emission were explained away by the legends of creatures causing an otherwise guilt-producing and self-conscious behavior. Thus people could say they were not to blame for it; it was obviously outside of their control: they were a victim.
  • Young women/men being sexually assaulted in their sleep by a known attacker such as as friend or family member, although not common, has been reported and may explain some "nocturnal" attacks. The victims may find it easier to explain the attack as "supernatural" rather than confront the idea that the attack came from someone that is trusted in the family .
