A toy dog is a very small dog kept as a pet, as compared to a very small working dog, although both pet and working dogs can be very small. When an all-breed association or kennel club divides dog breeds into groups for purposes of competition, the Toy Group contains most of the smallest dog breeds in the club's registry. There has been much discussion as to whether the designation signifies only a dog's size (weight, height, or both), or also refers to how a breed is used or its temperament. This has sometimes led to misunderstanding or bad feeling in the world of purebred dogs; there seems to be no consensus.
It seems safest to define toy dogs as being determined by the size of the dogs, and leave discussion of function and temperament to the various breed clubs. However, this can also be problematic, as there is no firm agreement on what height or weight makes a dog a ''toy'', and the upper height limit of some toy dog breeds is over 12 inches at the withers, which places these dogs within the height range of dogs in some other groups as well.
What makes a toy breed?
Does size matter?
Inconsistency in the placement of small terriers into various kennel clubs' groups illustrates the point. The Tenterfield Terrier, for example, is in Group 2, Terriers of the ANKC. It was slated for placement in Group 1, Toys, but quickly reclassified after objection from owners, who argued that the Tenterfield was a working terrier. In the AKC, the Toy Fox Terrier, a dog of similar type to the Tenterfield, was placed in the Toy Group without objection from owners, but is in the Terrier Group in the UKC. The diminutive Yorkshire Terrier is undisputedly a toy. The Australian Terrier is one of the smallest terriers,

Breeds not consistent/not listed
English Toy Spaniel, Phalene, and Brussels Griffon are not listed on the List of dog breeds page and apparently need to be there, at least w/cross-references to the breed name as it appears elsewhere on the list. See Sannse's spreadsheet--? Elf | Talk 01:36, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Well, I took it upon myself to add Phalene (also wrote a stub) as I think they're adorable and also (and more to the point) know that the FCI classes them as a separate breed. Fun and games.... Quill 09:41, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Belgian Griffon
Isn't that a Brussels Griffon? I'm about to revert... Quill 01:02, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)
:Nope, actually 2 different breeds. Why can't they call them things like Quasinudulated Fangimonial Doghound instead of something that sounds really similar to something else? Those fools, if only they'd have asked me-- Elf | Talk 00:02, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Indestructible Ink On many occasions it is of importance to employ an ink indestructible by the action of corrosive substances, and will not equally destroy the material on which it is applied. For black ink, 25 grs. of copal in powder, are to be dissolved in 200 grs. of oil of lavender, by the assistance of a gentle heat, and are then to be mixed with 2 1/2 grs. of lampblack and 1/2 gr. of indigo; for red ink use 120 grs. of oil of lavender, 17 grs. of Copal, and 60 grains of vermilion. A little oil of lavender or of turpentine may be added if the ink be found too thick. A mixture of genuine asphalt(?) dissolved in oil of turpentine or benzene(?), amber varnish and lampblack, would be still superior.
This ink is particularly useful in labelling phials, etc. containing chemical or corrosive substances.

Some of this stuff must have been used on my college transcripts. I can't seem to change them, no matter what I do. Transwiki and Delete. Geogre 04:24, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC) (Class of 1885)
* What's your rationale?
*Sorry: Rationale for deletion: the material here is out of date. Secondly, it's a how-to. So, it is telling us how to create an ink that is no longer the permanent inks that are used in the trades. It could be sent to Wikisource, however, as it would be interesting to collect the how-to's of home encyclopediae from the 19th century. Geogre 12:35, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Keep and move to Indestructible ink. Encyclopedic and still workable olde stuffe. Needs some work, though. Mikkalai 06:34, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Move to Indestructible ink. Agree with Mikkalai. Encyclopedic per definition (see source text ;-) ) Kim Bruning 20:54, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Keep and move to Indestructible ink. Why? Because I just like it, that's why. "Indestructible by any process." "Indestructible by any process." And better yet "will not equally destroy the material on which it is applied." So, I can paint that on my no-wrinkle shirt and it will deflect bullets? Without "equally destroying" my shirt? But, O my goodness, what happens if an indestructible ink meets an irresistable eraser? But just maybe it's no more indestructible than my wrinkle-free shirt is wrinkle-free. Maybe it should be moved to "destruction-resistant ink." [User:Dpbsmith|Dpbsmith (talk)] 00:59, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC) P. S. I really am voting for "keep and move to Indestructible ink" just in case it isn't clear... [User:Dpbsmith|Dpbsmith (talk)] 01:00, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I like it too. Keep. Wile E. Heresiarch 03:18, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)
