Shopping

In personal life, shopping can be a major recreational activity. It is all too human to become absorbed in the details of selection, purchase, and display behavior. Shopping is buying things, sometimes as a recreational activity. A cheap version of the latter is window shopping (just looking, not buying). Just as sport can become a major consumer activity, shopping can be a major psychological interest for some people. The type of shopping can be a market differentiator, whether for clothes, perfume, shoes, hats, and so forth. When shopping, a consumer can simply ask the store attendant for service and advice before purchase of the product or service.

Kinds of shops

A large shop is called a superstore or megastore. A shop with many different kinds of articles is called a department store. Many shops are part of a chain: a number of similar shops with the same name selling the same products in different locations. The shops may be owned by one company, or there may be a franchising company that has franchising agreements with the shop owners ( restaurant chain). Some shops sell second-hand goods. Often the public can also sell goods to such shops. In other cases, especially in the case of a nonprofit shop, the public donates goods to the shop to be sold ( thrift store). In give-away shops goods can be taken for free. For details on the various types of retail stores see:

  • Shop

A shop is an enclosed location where a specific activity is carried out. In manufacturing operations, such as in motor car assembly, the term can be frequently used as in ''upholstery shop'' and ''paint shop''. In education, the term ''shop'' is used informally to describe courses in vocational education (or industrial arts) and classroom specifically tailored for these classes, such as ''wood shop'' and ''auto shop''. In more general usage, a ''shop'' is taken to mean a retail shop. (See the article Retailer for details.) The verb to ''shop'' refers to the activity of searching for item(s) for the sake of purchasing them. Shopping most typically takes place at a retail shop, hence the verb's origins.

:''For other meanings of shop, click here.'' "''Shops''" is a prose written by Xi Xi, which has been adopted as reading materials for the Chinese language paper of the HKCEE. This passage illustrates the ageing buildings, squatters, and old-fashioned traditional shops in Central and Western District, particularly in Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun, as well as other human behaviour in this hustling district. She expressed her tinge of nostalgia of her childhood, and the disappearing old shops due to drastic infrastructural development. Category:Hong Kong literature

A newspaper essay is considered encyclopedia material? there must be something here we aren't being told. --Wetman 06:02, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC) That's not a newspaper essay, but something like a prose. In fact, it is a narrative, descriptive, and poetic Chinese essay. Jerry Crimson Mann 06:46, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC) :I understand now. Should it be a subsection under its author, since it doesn't stand alone as an encyclopedia entry? --Wetman 17:01, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC) Well, I'm not so sure. Actually this is my first time to edit author's works. Ans I just tried to follow those of Shakespeare's: And we can see there's a separate page for each of his works. So do you have any better suggestions? Jerry Crimson Mann

    The Shop Around The Corner

It was directed by Ernst Lubitsch. ''The Shop Around the Corner'' was remade in 1998 as ''You've Got Mail''. Shopping Hours

Customs and regulations for shopping hours (times that shops are open) vary from country to country.

    United States

In the U.S., shopping hours vary widely. Key variables are the size of the metropolitan area, the type of store, and the size of the store. In major metropolitan areas like New York and Los Angeles, some drugstores and supermarkets are routinely open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, while department stores and most other large retailers are open from 10 AM to 9 PM, 7 days a week. Most locations of the country's largest retailer, Wal-Mart (especially its ''Supercenter'' hypermarkets), are open continuously except on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Other hypermarket chains tend to follow Wal-Mart's lead. Boutiques and smaller shops often close early at 5 or 6 PM, and may be closed one or two days per week. In many smaller cities and rural towns, there are strong religious traditions that cause most local retailers to stay closed on Sunday, and the few that are open may have reduced hours. However, many of the same communities will have at least one Wal-Mart that is open around the clock.

    Netherlands

In the Netherlands each town has the evening of either Thursday or Friday designated as shopping evening. In most cases it is Thursday. Towns for which it is Friday include:
  • Bergen op Zoom
  • Delft
  • Eindhoven
  • Oegstgeest
  • Rotterdam On regular evenings most shops close at 6 p.m., but supermarkets often at 8 or 9, sometimes 10 p.m. Many towns have one or more little supermarkets that are open until later in the evening, occasionally all night. A regular size supermarket that is open until midnight seven days a week is Food Village at Schiphol Airport (before customs, hence not only for air travellers).

    Shopping days

In some countries most shops are closed on Sundays. In Islamic countries some shops are closed on Fridays. In Israel many shops are closed on Friday evening and Saturday during daytime. Each

    Rental Shop

A rental shop is a store where a consumer can borrow reusable products for a fee for a certain period of time before returning them. Typically, a customer must sign up for an account with the shop and give billing information like a credit card number. If items are returned late, the shop usually charges late fees, which typically accumulate day by day. Some shops now have policies where instead of late fees, they will treat overdue items as a sale after a certain date, and charge a price equivalent to a standard sale of that object (with appropriate deductions for the rental fee already paid and for its pre-opened condition). The most common type of rental shop are video rental outlets, offering primarily movies. Many such shops also offer music or computer games as well. Many motion pictures that do not perform well in theaters depend on the rental market for success, and some movies are released direct-to-video. Blockbuster Video is the largest and most popular video rental shop in the United States.
