Indian Handicrafts

Handicraft

Handicraft, also known as craftwork or simply craft, is a type of work where useful and decorative devices are made completely by hand or using only simple tools. Usually the term is applied to traditional means of making goods. The individual artisanship of the items is a paramount criterion, such items often have cultural and/or religious significance. Items made by mass production or machines are not handicrafts. Usually, what distinguishes the term handicraft from the frequently used category Arts and Crafts is a matter of intent: handicrafted items are intended to be used, worn, et cetera, having a purpose beyond simple decoration. Handicrafts are generally considered more traditional work, created as a necessary part of daily life, whilst "Arts and Crafts" implies more of a hobby pursuit and a demonstration/perfection of a creative technique. In practical terms, the categories have a great deal of overlap.

There is nothing about sewing . Where could i find something about sewing with a pattern or creating a skirt or other garnment for women?

Or painting or silk painting or basketmaking or embroidery or wood carving or flower arranging but bone carving is included.. anyway missing quite a few things. Can anyone help before I extend the list by suggestion other limits on what handicraft is not? What does flower arranging come under for example? (talk)--BozMo 22:30, 7 May 2004 (UTC) Flower arranging is part of interior decoration while embroidery has its own article and is an important part of Textile art wood carving can be one of the many variations of the Art of sculpture or simply a hobby, depending on who makes it and why. Non-Resident Indian And Person Of Indian Origin

:''"NRI" redirects here. For other meanings, see NRI (disambiguation)'' A non-resident Indian (NRI) is an Indian citizen who has migrated to another country. Other terms with the same meaning are overseas Indian and expatriate Indian. For tax and other official purpose the government of India considers any Indian national away from India for more than 180 days in a year an NRI. In common usage, this often includes Indian born individuals who have taken the citizenship of other countries. A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) is literally, simply a person of Indian origin who is not a citizen of India. For the purposes of issuing a PIO Card, the Indian government considers anyone of Indian origins up to four generations removed, to be a PIO http://www.indianembassy.org/policy/PIO/Introduction_PIO.html. There is a huge NRI and PIO population across the world, estimated at around 25 million.

    Moving on out

The most significant historical emigration from India was to South East Asia. It started as a military expedition by Hindu, and later Buddhist, kings of South India and resulted in the settlers' merging with the local society. The influence of Indian culture is still strongly felt in South East Asia, especially in places like Bali (in Indonesia). However, in such cases, it is not reasonable to apply the label 'PIO' to the descendents of emigrants from several centuries back, especially since intermixture is so great as to negate the value of such nomenclature in this context. During the nineteenth century and until the end of the Raj, much of the migration that happened was of a forced nature - export of (thinly disguised) slave labor to other colonies under the indenture system. The major destinations, in chronological order, were Mauritius, British Guyana, the West Indies (Trinidad and Jamaica), Fiji and East Africa. There was also a small amount of free emigration of skilled laborers and professionals to some of these countries

Non-Resident Indian And Person Of Indian Origin

Perhaps this article should be moved to Person of Indian Origin. Andrew Yong 00:07, 15 Mar 2004 (UTC) I disagree. The two terms are not synonymous, although they are often confused. Non-Resident Indian refers to a person of Indian nationality, who does not live in India. He maintains his Indian citizenship, in most cases, and still has a strong affinity with the nation. Person of Indian Origin refers to a person whose ancestors are Indian, but is himself foreign-born. He may still identify wholly or partly with Indian culture, is probably proud of his Indian roots, but his citizenship and his personal identity are not ''nationally'' Indian, although he may be so culturally. A comparable situation is with Americans of Irish, Polish, Italian, etc descent. They are proud of where their ancestors came from, but they are unquestionably American. That corresponds to PIO, ''NOT'' to NRI. Davidcannon 00:47, 15 Mar 2004 (UTC) I agree. According to the FERA act of 1973, an NRI is a person who: 1.Indian citizens who stay abroad for employment or for carrying on any business or vocation or for any other purpose in circumstances indicating an indefinite period of stay outside India. 2.Indian Citizens working abroad on assignments with Foreign Governments or regional/international agencies like the World Bank, International Monetary Fund,World Health Organization and Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific etc. 3.Officials of Central and State Governments and Public sector undertakings deputed abroad on temporary assignments with foreign Governments/agencies/organizations or posted to their branches or offices abroad. This clearly indicated that an NRI is an Indian Citizen living abroad. A PIO is more losely defined as someone who has ever been an Indian citizen or has parents/grandparents/great-grandparents who have ever been an Indian citizen, or whose spouse is a PIO. Rather than "American Indians" it should be specified for the sake of clarity those "Indians" ("Native Americans") in the United States of America (though the soverign Indian Reservations may perhaps be called other countries). --Daniel C. Boyer ---- The motorcycle manufacturer has been reborn. --Daniel C. Boyer 13:30 Sep 10, 2002 (UTC) ---- 2 The language spoken in India :Really, which one? Hindi, Urdu, Gujurati, Punjabi ..... nobody could say "in India they speak Indian". -- Chris Q 14:01 Nov 20, 2002 (UTC) ::Having removed this entry and had it reinstated, I have changed it to "any one of...". I still don't think anyone educated would refer to a language as Indian, except in the sense of a language from or related to India. Maybe some primary school Kids might say "that guy from India was speaking Indian", but surely nobody in high-school or beyond would say that. -- Chris Q 08:47 Feb 24, 2003 (UTC) :::You are right of course. I'll take it out again. Sorry! -- sannse 12:58 Feb 24, 2003 (UTC) ---- Does or did anyone call residents of the East Indies Indians or East Indians? If so it should go back in the list as a separate item. --rmhermen :I don't know, but but in my Canadian part of the world I have heard the term "East Indian" used to refer to people from India. -- Stephen Gilbert 16:54 Feb 24, 2003 (UTC) ---- Christopher Columbus didn't name them Indians because he was lost. He named them from the Spanish words for "people of God". India was called Hindustan at the time. The current info on the page is a common misconception. -- LGagnon ---- ''Moved from article:'' The idea that "most U.S. Indians now call themselves ''Native Americans''" is incorrect! Any statement which " with "most Indian" is incorrect! More than 500 Federally recognize American Indian Tribes exist in America today, each calling themselves by their own historic names. While non-Indians have decided to refer to American Indians as "Native American's", American Indians who retain
