Skagen

Skagen (The Skaw) is a municipality in northern Denmark, in the county of North Jutland on the peninsula of Jutland. The municipality covers an area of 143 km², and has a total population of 12,691. The nearby headland at Grenen is a spectacular setting where the two parts of the Baltic Sea meet (the Kattegat and the Skagerrak). This makes for turbulent seas and strandings, beachings and shipwreckings are not uncommon. The frequent shipping losses and the strategic location as the gateway to the Baltic led to Skagen being the site of one of Denmark's earliest lighthouses, the Vippefyr, constructed in the 15th century (a reconstruction of which sits to the north of the town). This was built and funded by the late medieval Danish state with the proceeds of the sound dues and was superseded by the 'white lighthouse' or hvidefyr in the 17th century and the far taller 'grey lighthouse' or gråfyr of the 1850's. The area is extremely picturesque, and distinguished by its low, yellow houses with red tile roofs nestled into the beach areas. The impressive and wild landscape was largely formed by a severe process of desertification that hit the area in the 18th and 19th centuries, leading to the abandonment of the old parish church to the migrating sands, the famous tilsandende kirke. The tower of the church remains protruding from the dunes as it was left as a sea marker when the church was abandoned at the close of the 18th century. The moving dunes and desertification problems were brought under control in the latter 19th and early 20th centuries by large-scale plantations of grasses, bushes and fir trees, although two significant migratory dunes remain, including the enormous Råbjerg milen. The area is also closely associated with a community of artists, an artist colony, who flocked to this picturesque, and then unspoiled, area in the late 1800s. In 1890 it had become considerable easier to travel to this remote destination when Skagen became connected

Discount

In finance, discounting is the process of finding the current value of an amount of cash at some future date, and along with compounding cash form the basis of time value of money calculations. The discounted value of a cash flow is determined by reducing its value by the appropriate ''discount rate'' for each unit of time between the time when the cashflow is to be valued to the time of the cash flow. Most often the discount rate is expressed as an annual rate. To calculate the net present value of a single cash flow, it is divided by one plus the interest rate for each period of time that will pass. This is expressed mathematically as raising the divisor to the power of the number of units of time.

Example

For example: You want to find the net present value of $100 that will be received in five years time. What is it worth now? What amount of money, if you let it grow at the discount rate, would equal $100 in five years? We will assume a 12% per year discount rate. NPV = 100 dollars divided by 1 plus 12% (0.12) divided by 1 plus 12% (0.12), etc. :{\rm NPV}=\frac{100}{(1+0.12)^5}. Since 1.125 is about 1.762, the net present value is about $56.74.

Discount rate

The discount rate used in financial calculations is usually chosen to be equal to the cost of capital. Some adjustment may be made to the discount rate to take account of risks associated with uncertain cashflows, with other developments.

Discount factor

The discount factor', P(T), is the number by which a future cash flow to be received at time T must be multiplied in order to obtain the current present value. Thus for a fixed annually compounded discount rate r we have : P(T) = \frac{1}{(1+r)^T} For a fixed continuously compounded discount rate r we have : P(T) = e^{-rT}

    Discounts And Allowances

Discounts and allowances are modifications to the basic price. They could modify either the manufacturers list price (which is a price determined by the manufacturer and often printed on the package), the retail price (which is set by the retailer and often attached to the product with a sticker), or the list price (which is quoted to a potential buyer, usually in written form). The market price (also called effective price) is the amount actually paid. The purpose of discounts is to increase short-term sales, move out-of-date stock, reward valuable customers, or encourage distribution channel members to perform a function. Some discounts and allowances are forms of sales promotion.

    Types of discounts and allowances

The most common types of discounts and allowances are:
  • Cash discounts for prompt payment. They are intended to speed payment and thereby provide liquidity to the firm. They are sometimes used as a promotional device. Examples are:
  • * 2/10 net 30 - this means the buyer must pay within 30 days, but will receive a 2% discount if they pay within 10 days.
  • * 3/7 EOM - this means the buyer must pay by the End Of the Month, but will receive a 3% discount if they pay within 7 days.
  • * 2/15 net 40 ROG - this means the buyer must pay within 40 days of Receipt Of Goods, but will receive a 2% discount if paid in 15 days.
  • Quantity discounts. These are price reductions given for large purchases. The rationale behind them is to obtain economies of scale and pass some (or all) of these savings on to the customer. In some industries, buyer groups and co-ops have formed to take advantage of these discounts. Generally there are two types:
  • * Cumulative quantity discounts. - These are price reductions based on the quantity purchased over a period of time (often one year). The expectation is that they will impose an implied switching cost and thereby bond the purchaser to the seller.
  • * Non-cumulative quantity discounts
