Skin

In zootomy and dermatology, skin is an organ of the integumentary system; which is composed of a layer of tissues that protect underlying muscles and organs. Skin is used for insulation, vitamin D production, sensation, and excretion (through sweat). Skin on creatures regularly subjected to sunlight have pigmentation which absorbs the potentially dangerous radiation contained therein. Human skin pigmentation varies across populations in a visually dramatic manner. This has sometimes led to the classification of people(s) on the basis of skin color. See the article on human skin color for more information. Mammalian skin often contains hairs, which in sufficient density is called fur. The hair mainly serves to augment the insulation the skin provides. On some animals the skin is very hard and thick, and can be processed to create leather. Damaged skin will try to heal by forming scar tissue, often giving rise to discoloration and depigmentation of the skin. The skin is often known as "the largest organ in the human body": this applies to exterior surface, as it covers the body, ''appearing'' to have the largest surface area of all the organs. Moreover, it applies to weight, as it weighs more than any single internal organ. For the average adult homo sapiens, it has a surface area of between 1.5-2.0 square metres. The skin on a person's face is seen by people that person interacts with. For some people, therefore, facial skin care is of particular importance, and they often use cosmetics to deal with the appearance of the face and condition of the skin, such as those for pore control and blackhead cleansing.

Layers

Skin is composed of the ''epidermis'' and the ''dermis''. Below these layers lies the ''hypodermis'', which is not usually classified as a layer of skin. The outermost epidermis is made up of stratified squamous epithelium with an underlying basement membrane. It contains no blood vessels, and is nourished by diffusion from the dermis.

Second Skin

The concept of a second skin is common to a range of clothing-related fetishes. One reason why these materials may be fetishised is that the garment acts as a fetishistic surrogate for the wearer's own skin — a second skin. The material may be regarded as providing a super-stimulus that is more intense than the normal response associated with real skin. The forms of fetishism related to this concept can be regarded as forming a spectrum, as follows:
  • Spandex fetishism (shiny, smooth, soft, porous)
  • Rubber fetishism (shiny, smooth, less yielding, waterproof)
  • Leather fetishism (shiny, smooth, waterproof, material of animal origins)
  • Fur fetishism (soft, warm, material of animal origins)
  • Nylon fetishism (stretchy, smooth material, sometimes shiny) Some examples of turn-ons that are related to these:
  • In spandex fetishism, wearers of skin-tight spandex garments may be perceived by the viewer as being naked, or simply coated in a shiny substance like paint. Many of the stretch fabrics are also shiny and often produced in bright colours, adding further visual stimulus to add to the physical sensations produced by the material. The tightness of the garments may also be viewed as a kind of bondage.
  • In rubber fetishism, as above, but with the additional smell and less yielding nature of rubber. The association with sex toys is also significant.
  • In leather fetishism, as above, but with the added association of animal skin, and the association of "rugged" leather-wearing lifestyles, and leather bondage equipment.
  • In fur fetishism, the fact that the fur was originally an animal's skin and hair, and that it provides warmth and comfort. There is also an element of atavism involving associations with the nature of the animal. The title of the fetishistic magazine ''Skin Two'' alludes to this concept.

Is there a list of skin diseases or something like that? listing things like athlete's foot, eczema, psoriasis, acne, skin cancer, impetigo... I just created Hidradenitis suppurativa and wanted to know if there's a place I should be listing it. --zandperl 19:21, 5 Apr 2004 (UTC) Well, I just found it's on the dermatology page--is that really the best place for it? there's not much content other than that. --zandperl 19:22, 5 Apr 2004 (UTC) :Yess I just created it !! Surface area

I choose to question the statement that the skin has the largest surface area of all the organs. The lungs, for instance, has an immense surface area, though I am not sure of the numbers. Thus, I raise the issue here. What I do know is that the lungs, if placed outside the confinement of the body, could reach a volume of 6 cubical meters, if all the folds were to be straightened. Please help to look into this. --TVPR 11:50, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC) :Okay, I'm removing the statement about surface area until someone can back it up. The interor of the intestine, for instance, can reach a surface area of 300 square meters. Yes, really. And the intestine is one single organ. --TVPR 08:49, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

    Under My Skin

:''For the 1950 movie, see Under My Skin (movie).'' ''Under My Skin'' is the second album by pop punk singer Avril Lavigne, released on May 25, 2004 by Arista Records. In its first week of release, it reached #1 on the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

    Track listing

    #"Take Me Away" (2:57) #"Together" (3:14) #"Don't Tell Me" (3:21) #"He Wasn't" (2:59) #"How Does It Feel" (3:44) #"My Happy Ending" (4:02) #"Nobody's Home" (3:33) #"Forgotten" (3:16) #"Who Knows" (3:30) #"Fall to Pieces" (3:28) #"Freak Out" (3:13) #"Slipped Away" (3:33) #"I Always Get What I Want" (2:33) - Internationally released only

    Making of the album

Lavigne wrote much of the album with Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk. She also co-wrote one track, "Nobody's Home", with Ben Moody, formerly of Evanescence, and the rest with her guitarist Evan Taubenfeld. Lavigne used three producers for ''Under My Skin'', notably:
  • Butch Walker from Marvelous 3;
  • Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace; and
  • Don Gilmore, who has produced Good Charlotte and Linkin Park. Much of the album was recorded in Raine Maida's Malibu studios as Maida is Kreviazuk's husband and the rest was recorded nearby. On her website, Lavigne states that she has learned a lot since her debut record ''Let Go'': "I was involved in every aspect of making this record. I'm very hands-on. I knew how I wanted the drums, the guitar tones, and the structures to be. I understand the whole process so much better this time because I've been through it. I'm really picky with my sound." The track, "Slipped Away", is about the death of Lavigne's grandfather.

    Singles

  • "Don't Tell Me" was the first single. It deals with a girl rejecting a boy's attempts to pressure her into sex when she is not ready. The song shot Lavigne back to the charts, reaching number one in several countries around the world, and number
