Slip
In telecommunications, a slip is a positional displacement in a sequence of transmitted symbols that causes the loss or insertion of one or more symbols. Slips are usually caused by inadequate synchronization of the two clocks controlling the transmission or by poor reception of the signal. (Source: Federal Standard 1037C.)
In boating, a marine slip is a space at a dock used to berth boats and flying boats.
In water transport, a ferry slip or barge slip is a shore terminal designed to securely and easily receive the ferry. If the ferry carries vehicles the slip will include a ramp called an ''apron'' to connect the shore approach with the vehicle deck.
In clothing, a slip is a woman's underdress or underskirt.

In ceramics, slip is a diluted clay solution used for decorating or coating pottery or for casting in a plaster or rubber mold. Slip cast ceramics are easily recognized by their even thickness (seen when broken) and smooth interior.
In aeronautics, slip is when the airflow across the aircraft is not aligned with the principal axis. This is due to uncoordinated operation of the rudder and aileron flight controls and may be an intentional manuver.
In structural engineering, slip prevents excessive loads on joints and allows response to stress without damage. Used particularly in some seismic retrofit modifications to large structures. See slip critical joint and slip joint.
In geology, a strike-slip fault is a type of geological fault that does not cause elevation or depression of one side of the fault.

Bit Slip
In digital transmission, Bit slip is the loss of a bit or bits, caused by variations in the respective clock rates of the transmitting and receiving devices.
One cause of bit slippage is overflow of a receive buffer that occurs when the transmitter's clock rate exceeds that of the receiver. This causes one or more bits to be dropped for lack of storage capacity.

Frame Slip
In the reception of framed data, a frame slip is the loss of synchronization between a received frame and the receiver clock, causing a frame misalignment event, and resulting in the loss of the data contained in the received frame.
Note: A frame slip should not be confused with a dropped frame where synchronization is not lost, as in the case of buffer overflow, for example.

Freudian Slip
The Freudian slip is named after Sigmund Freud, who described the phenomena he called faulty action (''Fehlleistung'' or ''parapraxis'') in his 1901 book ''The Psychopathology of Everyday Life''.
The ''Freudian slip'' is an error in human action, speech or memory that is caused by the unconscious mind. The error often appears to the observer as being casual, bizarre and nonsensical.
Although it is certainly true that not all errors done by humans can be explained as Freudian slips, such behavior is often analyzed on the basis that they may be. "Sometimes the truth has a way of coming out in the most embarrassing and unexpected ways." Although this may be true in many cases, such analysis should certainly be treated with skepticism.
Freud's theoretical focus on unconscious sexual motivations has resulted in a number of ''Freudian slip jokes'' where "embarrassing and unexpected" comments figure prominently. A lightbulb joke example:
:Question: "How many psychoanalysts does it take to change a light bulb?"
:Answer: "Two! One to turn the bulb and one to hold the penis. Err, ladder."
Another popular joke is based on Freud's concept of the Oedipus complex:
:"A Freudian slip is when you say one thing but mean your mother."
In everyday usage, ''Freudian slip'' has come to mean a slip of the tongue that reveals the speaker's true meaning or intention.

Slip-Turn
A slip-turn is a manoeuvre in which an aircraft turns using only the rudder. In most aircraft, the presence of a fixed vertical stabiliser complicates the manoeuvre. However, in those in which the whole of the vertical stabiliser comprises the rudder, such as the Fokker Dr.I triplane, the aircraft can be made to effectively skid in the horizontal plane, a technique employed by the German WWI ace Werner Voss to great effect.
Slip Jig
The slip jig is one the four most common Irish Step dances - the others being the reel, the jig and the hornpipe. It is unique to Ireland and is danced in 9/8 time by women only wearing the "soft shoe".
