Lake Tahoe

:''Tahoe redirects here. For the SUV, see Chevrolet Tahoe.'' Lake Tahoe is one of the deepest (1645 feet/501 m), largest (192 sq. mi./497 km²), highest (6229 feet/1898 m), and bluest lakes in the United States. Only Oregon's Crater Lake is bluer and deeper at 1930 feet (588 m). Lake Tahoe is in the Sierra Nevada mountains, on the border between California and Nevada, with approximately two-thirds of the shoreline in California. Prior to the silver strike in Virginia City, Nevada in the 1860s the only people that inhabited the Tahoe area were the Native American tribe known as the Washoe. During the silver strike thousands of trees were turned into beams for supporting the mines in Virginia City. Mark Twain spent time at Lake Tahoe during this time and included the experience in his travel memoir, ''Roughing It''. Today, the area surrounding Lake Tahoe is full of restaurants, ski slopes and wooded homes, and casinos. As gambling is legal on the Nevada side of the lake, the resort area of Lake Tahoe attracts all kinds of fun seekers, year round. During ski season, thousands of people from all over California, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Jose, flock to the slopes or the shore. During the summer, the lake is popular for water sports and beach activities. The two cities most identified with the Lake Tahoe tourist area are South Lake Tahoe, California and the smaller Stateline, Nevada; smaller centers on the California shoreline include Tahoe City and Kings Beach. Lake Tahoe has suffered from so much use. Until recently construction on the banks of the Lake had been, more or less, under the control of wealthy real estate developers. Construction activities had been linked to a 'clouding' of the amazingly blue waters of the Lake. A court injunction has stopped all new construction until new rules that ensure the protection of the lake over the interests of individuals are in place. Although for much of its circumference, highways

gotta get a picture here.... Couple of points about Lake Tahoe. Sorry, I'm not much of a writer, so I'll start here and hopefully someone can help turn this into somthing worth inclusion. 1) a map would help too - a map could put some better feeling to the statement that "The area surrounding Lake Tahoe is full of restaurants, ski slopes and wooded homes, and casinos." This would depend on your opinon of what constitutes "full". There are, in fact, something like 6 large casinos on the south end of the lake, and another 2 or 3 on the north end. This is not counting slot machines in grocery stores and gas stations on the NV side. In any case, about 1/3 to 1/2 the shoreline of Lake Tahoe is undeveloped, perhaps more. There are large tracts on both the east and west sides that are undeveloped, or have only state/federal campgrounds/parks. 2) There is considerable disagreement about exactly what is causing the degredation of the clarity of the Lake. The latest thing I've heard get the blame was roads (particularly dirt roads) because of runoff. There have also been suggestions that building over/draining/limiting the natural wetlands at the south end of the lake, where a good deal of water enters the lake, has caused that water to be in a less filtered state when it enters the lake, and consequently negatively impacts clarity. Smog blown over the mountains from the central valley has been cited as contributing. Excessive lake levels (using the lake as water storage by local water authorities) has been suggested as causing greater than normal lake edge erosion, with consequently more "stuff" in the water, again, decreasing clarity. Basicly, there are a large number of potential causes, none of which are likely THE cause, all of which likely contribute, and all of which have their interest groups that are particularly pushing/defending that cause. UC Davis was commissioned to do a study of the causes of clarity loss/pollution. I don't think they've finished

Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevrolet Tahoe (and similar GMC Yukon) is a full-size SUV from General Motors. Chevrolet and GMC sold two different-sized SUVs under their Blazer and Jimmy model names through the early 1990s. This situation changed when GMC rebadged the full-size Jimmy as the Yukon in 1992. Chevrolet waited until 1995's introduction of a four-door version to rebadge the compact S-10 Blazer as the Blazer, renaming the full-size Blazer as the Tahoe. In the United States, the Tahoe is a popular alternative to the Ford Crown Victoria for police car use, especially in rural areas.

1992

The new GMC Yukon was introduced for 1992, while Chevrolet continued calling their version the Blazer. All were 2-door models through 1994. The Tahoe was ''Motor Trend'' magazine's Truck of the Year for 1996. The Tahoe/Yukon were shorter than the Suburban on which they were based, but shared that vehicle's ''GMT400'' platform. This was a true truck chassis, and was based on that used in the Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup truck. Both two-door and four-door models were produced, as well as rear- and four-wheel drive. "AutoTrac" full-time all wheel drive and OnStar were added for 1998. The upscale Denali trim line to the Yukon appeared around this time as the vehicles became popular with wealthy families. Engines:
  • 1992-1995 - 5.7 L ''Vortec 5700'' V8, 200 hp (149 kW)
  • 1996-1998 - 6.5 L Diesel V8, 180 hp (134 kW) (2-door 4WD Tahoe only)
  • 1996-1999 - 5.7 L ''Vortec 5700'' V8, 255 hp (190 kW)

    2000

The vehicles were redesigned for the 2000 model year on the new ''GMT800'' platform, still shared with the full-sized pickups. Two new engines replaced the old 5.7 L small-block, and while both were smaller, both produced more power. The manual transmission was dropped. "StabiliTrak" stability control was offered for the first time in 2003, as were XM Satellite Radio, Bose audio, and a DVD
