Amazon

The name ''Amazon'' may refer to several concepts:
  • The legendary Amazons, women renowned in antiquity for their prowess in battle.
  • The Amazon River, Amazon Rainforest, and Amazon Basin through which it flows. The river was so named because early Portuguese explorers reported having observed female warriors along its banks.
  • Amazonas, the name of several provinces in South America named for the river, including:
  • *Amazonas Department, Colombia
  • *Amazonas Region, Peru
  • *Amazonas State, Brazil
  • *Amazonas State, Venezuela
  • Amazon.com, the large online store that began as an online book store but which has expanded as a seller of many goods.
  • Swallows and Amazons is a series of children's books by English author Arthur Ransome.
  • A car model from Volvo. Perhaps as P120 in the US. See Volvo Amazon
  • Amazon parrots are a group of parrots native to the New World, which are usually predominantly green.
  • HMS ''Amazon'', name of many ships of the Royal Navy
  • The Game of the Amazons, an abstract board game
  • Amazon Carnival, an feast celebrated in Amazon, Brazil; de:Amazonas (Begriffsklärung) es:Amazona fr:Amazone nl:Amazone pl:Amazonka

    Amazons

In Greek mythology, the Amazons were either an ancient legendary nation of female warriors or a contemporary land of women at the outer edges of the world. The legends appear to have a nugget of factual basis in warrior women among the Scythians, but classical Greeks never ceased to be astounded at such unheard-of role-reversals. In early modern usage, the word was often used to refer to strong and independent women, in contrast to conventional stereotypes of women as weak and passive (see "damsel in distress"), but now "amazon" in such contexts has self-ironic overtones. (compare "Valkyrie".)

    Etymology

The name Ἀμαζὼν is probably derived from an Iranian ethnonym, ''*ha-mazan-'', originally meaning "warriors". A connected word is probably the Hesychius gloss ἁμαζακάραν· πολεμεῖν ("to make war", containing the Indo-Iranian root ''kar-'' "make" also in ''kar-ma''). The Greek variant of the name was connected by popular etymology to privative a + ''mazos'', "without breast", connected with an aetiological tradition that Amazons had their right breast cut off or burnt out, in order that they might be able to use the bow more freely; there is no indication of this practice in works of art, in which the Amazons are always represented with both breasts, although the right is frequently covered. Other suggested derivations were: ''a-'' (intensive) + ''mazos'', breast, "full-breasted"; ''a'' (privative) and ''masso'', touch, "not touching" (men); ''maza'', a Circassian word said to signify "moon", has suggested their connection with the worship of a moon-goddess, perhaps the Asiatic representative of Artemis.

    Amazons of Greek mythology

Amazons were said to have lived in Pontus near the shore of the Euxine Sea, where they formed an independent kingdom under the government of a queen, often named Hippolyta ("she lets her

    Amazon.Com

Amazon.com, Inc. is an American electronic commerce company based in Seattle, Washington. It was one of the first major companies to sell goods over the Internet. Amazon also owns Alexa Internet, a9.com, and the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). Amazon assigns a unique identifier, the Amazon Standard Identification Number (ASIN), to each item it sells. (For books, the ASIN is the same as the item's ISBN, if it has one.) Amazon offers access to its catalog via web services, much as Google does to its search engine. In addition, a9.com provides search engine services directly on the Amazon.com site. Launched in 1995, Amazon.com began as an online book-selling company but has now branched off into many other areas, including DVDs, music CDs, computer software, video games, electronics, apparel, furniture, and more.

Bezos saw the potential of the Internet; while the largest brick-and-mortar bookstore might sell upwards of 200,000 titles, an online bookstore could sell many times more. Bezos renamed his company "Amazon" in reference to the world's most voluminous river, the Amazon. Amazon.com began service in July 1995. The company was originally incorporated in 1994 in the state of Washington and was reincorporated in 1996 in Delaware. Amazon.com had its initial public offering on May 15, 1997, trading on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol AMZN at an IPO price of $18.00 per share (equivalent to $1.50 today due to stock splits). Amazon's initial business plan was unique, in that the company did not expect to turn a profit for a good four to five years after it was founded. This strategy proved to be a sound one in the wake of the dotcom collapse of 2000. Amazon grew at a steady pace in the late 1990s while other

I'm not sure what happened here, but the page for Amazon.com can no longer be accessed! Works for me. The Anome 17:34 Sep 24, 2002 (UTC) Is the inclusion of the "Boycott Amazon!" link appropriate? Lukobe 2/18/04
  • Probably, but if there are other stated opinions out there (or even a rebuttal by the company), it should be added as well. I have moved the link to the bottom, as in an encyclopedic article about Amazon.com, it's simply not the most important link. Eike 04:28, Feb 21, 2004 (UTC) The boycott has ended, in fact it ended almost two years ago. The link should be preserved, in my opinion. I'd update the description, but it says the page will be locked in a few minutes (presumably to prevent the link to amazon.com from being replaced with "affilate" links). --TexasDex 19:46, May 1, 2004 (UTC)

Merge in info from Jeff Bezos?

The article Jeff Bezos contains information about Amazon.com history that's not here. I think that info should be moved from that article to this one. — TreyHarris 21:25, 1 Jun 2004 (UTC) :Agreed. The information under the heading "Rise of Amazon.com" in Jeff Bezos would be more appropriate in Amazon.com. Don't forget to add a link to Amazon.com. --Jeff 22:08, Jun 1, 2004 (UTC)

    Beacon Hill?

Recently, the intro changed from: :Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) is an American electronic commerce company based in Seattle, Washington. to: :Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) is an American electronic commerce company based on Seattle, Washington's Beacon Hill. This edit is odd to me. First off, I don't think I've ever seen a company be identified with its neighborhood before. (Except for Wall Street, but that isn't a neighborhood, and most of the companies "on Wall Street" are actually somewhere else in Manhattan, or even in Jersey City.) Secondly, why Beacon Hill? That Amazon.com is based in Seattle I don't dispute, but more ''workers'' work in the International District than in Beacon Hill. What controls?

When attempting to click on the link to the Wikipedia entry for Amazon.com, I get an error message saying "You are not authorized to view this page." Is this a fault in the software, because the entry ends with ".com" ? :Both Amazon.com and http://www.amazon.com/ work for me. The Anome 17:38 Sep 24, 2002 (UTC) I can only say that when I try to click on the Amazon.com entry, I get this: "You are not authorized to view this page - You might not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied." I am using Internet Explorer 6.0 with java enabled. I can view any other Wikipedia page except that one. Has this happened with any other people here?

    Herodotus

Aziri, who's been lying to you? Herodotus says the Amazons lived in southern Russia, around the Thermodon River.http://www.myrine.at/Amazons/texts_e.html If you claim he said they were North African, show me the quote. - Mustafaa 17:42, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC) yes , see this : http://www.nissaba.nl/godinnen/beschra.htm , the writer speak also english , ask him for meer information. you can also see this :http://www.myrine.at/Amazons/index.html.Aziri 11:39, 15 Jul 2004 (UTC) :My understanding is that Amazons were located by various Greek mythographers in both North Africa and the farther shores of the Black Sea in Greek mythology. The idea was that the Amazons were always just beyond the farthest reaches of Greek navigation at the time the story circulated, just like the Cynocephali and Blemmyes. Smerdis of Tlön 14:48, 15 Jul 2004 (UTC) the amazones were in all case also a berber fighters. herodotus identificed them as berber .(you have the link in my first answer). the beeldes of amazones are also found in north africa. the name amazons in interpretated too as a berber word that probably cames from the word amazigh (it mean berber)....Aziri 13:03, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC) :It may be helpful to review http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/ptext?lookup=Hdt.+4.110.1 what Herodotus actually says, rather than relying on secondary interpretations. It would also be helpful to remember that Herodotus is an inveterate liar and nothing he says should ever be accepted uncritically. —No-One ''Jones'' 14:14, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC) you are right. herodotus was a big liar . becaue the God is the only one who don't lie , (because he cannot lie) but we can say that anybody is lying when his lie is not wished. examples : the Moor : they where black peopel. (that is a lie, because they where never black. ) +and they are mixed of arab-berber (that is alei because the Moor where in north africa before the coming of the arab). but we don't
