Holiday

The word holiday has related but different meanings in English-speaking countries, with the exception of the United States where usage differs greatly. Based on the English words holy and day, holidays originally represented special days of the Christian Church calendar. The word has evolved in general usage to mean any special day. In the United States, a holiday is a day set aside by a nation or culture (in some cases, multiple nations and cultures) typically for celebration but sometimes for some other kind of special culture-wide (or national) observation or activity. In the United States, a holiday can also be a special day on which school and/or offices are closed such as Labor Day. In most of the rest of the English speaking world (including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom) a holiday is rather a period spent away from home or business in travel or recreation (e.g. "I'm going on holiday to Majorca next week."), the American equivalent being "vacation".

Public holidays

A public holiday or legal holiday is a holiday endorsed by the state. Public holidays can be either religious, in which case they reflect the dominant religion in a country, or secular, in which case they are usually political or historical in character. "Public Holiday" is the term used in Australia, and "Bank Holiday" in the UK, although some industries in the UK work through Bank Holidays. "Legal Holiday" is not a term used outside the United States.

Consecutive holidays

Consecutive holidays are a string of holidays taken together without working days in between. They tend to be considered a good chance to take short trips, for example. In late 1990s, the Japanese government passed a law that increases the likelihood of consecutive holidays by moving holidays fixed on certain day

I think it would be really cool if all the holidays listed here could be viewed all at once on a single calender 19 May 2005

Merge of public holiday

I propose holiday and public holiday be merged into a single article. Was there suppose to be a difference between these 2 articles? :Merging might be a good idea. You could add the two articles to the list of Duplicate articles. --KF 07:13 18 May 2003 (UTC) :Thanks. Added. Samw 15:26 18 May 2003 (UTC)

Holidays vs. marker days

Are things like Grandparents Day really holidays? In my mind there is a difference between a holiday and a simple marker day. I would contend that if nobody takes a day off work for this day then it is not a holiday. Who disagrees? DJ Clayworth 15:26, 12 Nov 2003 (UTC) :I disagree. In its broadest sense a holiday is a ''holy'' day and a day for celebrating some event, person or thing. Taking the day off work is not a requirement, the celebration is. However, it is customary for employers, or the state, to declare that work is not done on certain holidays because their employees and/or customers/clients would be distracted by missing the celebrations and it is not a very productive workday. Hence taking the day off is associated with a holiday. Those commemoration or celebration days that are not ''public holidays'' - when people are given the day off work - are stil holidays in the broadest sense and should be mentioned. Otherwise we will have multiple articles on the same subject. kiwiinapanic 02:10, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)

National holidays' list

The stuff in the National holidays section of this page should probably be updated with the new additions caused by the relevant changes in WikiProject Countries, and moved to a separate page, e.g. List of holidays by country. --Shallot 17:38, 24 May 2004 (UTC) : Done now. --Joy [shallot] 20:15, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)
