    SES Astra

SES-Astra (Société Européenne des Satellites-Astra) is a Luxembourg-based corporation which owns and operates the Astra series of geostationary satellites, which transmit approximately 1100 analogue and digital television and radio channels via 176 transponders to 91 million households across Europe. Formed in 1985 as SES, it was Europe's first private satellite operator. Its slogan in 1997 was "Astra: The Satellite System". Nowadays it is "Your Satellite Connection to the World".

    Orbital Positions

There are currently 13 Astra satellites in orbit, not all currently in service, located at the following positions in geosynchronous orbit:
  • 5.2°E: Astra 1A. Originally sited at 19.2°E and used to broadcast the first European analogue direct-to-home TV services, this satellite is well past its expected lifetime and now in inclined orbit. Its last feed, RTL, terminates a few days prior to the 16th anniversary of its first broadcast, on 2nd December 2004 the satellite was finally retired.
  • 19.2°E: 1C, 1E, 1F, 1G, 1H, 2C. This is the most common orbital position for direct-to-home satellite TV and radio transmission in Germany and Central Europe. 1G is also used for home satellite internet (with DVB modems) and the free-to-air TV and radio channels (Astra-Mosaic).
  • 19.5°E: Astra 1B is currently positioned here, having drifted from 19.2°E since falling out of service.
  • 23.5°E and 24.2°E: Astra 1D, 3A.
  • 28.2°E: Astra 2A, 2B, 2D. BSkyB broadcast their Sky Digital direct-to-home television service to the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland from this satellite constellation. Eutelsat's Eurobird satellite also operates close to this position.

    Holden Astra

The Holden Astra is a compact car sold by General Motors in Australia and New Zealand. Between 1984 and 1989, it was an Australian-made, rebadged Nissan Pulsar, sold in Australia only. Nissan Pulsars sold in that market were, at the time, Nissan Langleys, while the Astra had a Pulsar-like grille with the Holden lion badge. These were known as the LB and LC series Astras. As with the Pulsar, the Astra went through a model change in 1987. This LD Astra model was produced until 1989, Holden replacing the Astra with a rebadged Toyota Corolla, known as the Nova. In New Zealand, the name was first used on imported versions of the Opel Astra A (or Astra F) from 1995, with Australia following suit in 1996. These did not differ from their European counterparts in aspects other than name. In Holden terms, this was the TR series. The TS Astra model change followed that of the Opel Astra B/G range, but the Coupé by Bertone was not offered with a Holden badge, though the convertible was. Like the Astra A, the Astra B was available as a wagon in New Zealand, but not Australia. As of December 2004, the AH Astra (Astra C or Astra H) five-door was being imported into Australia, selling alongside the Polish-built Astra B/G, which carried 'Astra Classic' badges. It is planned in August 2005, Holden will import the Astra Wagon and Astra SRI Turbo coupè. Astra

    Peugeot Astra

I hope I haven't upset anyone by making this a candidate for deletion - but I am sure there's no Japanese peugeot car company (there is a french one though), and the astra is a vauxhall. I used to own one. I googled but found nothing! Shurely this is "patent nonsense". Alex.zeffertt 19:34, 28 Sep 2004 (UTC)

    Astra Missile

Astra (Weapon) is an Air to Air (AA), Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile under development by India. This is the first indeginous air to air missile developed by India. The range of this missile is 80 km in head-on chase and 15km in tail chase. This missile was successfully tested without control, and guidance systems on may 9th, 11th and 12th 2003 India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing this advanced beyond visual range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) for its Mirage 2000, MIG-29, Sea Harrier, Su-30, and the Light Combat Aircraft LCA. Astra looks like a elongated Matra 530. It uses a indegineously developed solid fuel propellant, though DRDO is believed to be looking at rocket/ramjet propulsion similar to that used in its AKASH SAM project. The missile's onboard radio-frequency seeker has been largely designed in India. It will have an active homing range of 15 km. The missile has a pre-fragmented warhead & is fitted with a proximity fuze. A radar fuze already exists for the Astra, but the DRDO is currently working on a new laser fuze.
