History
Virgin Blue was launched on 3 August 2000, with two aircraft initially offering 7 return flights a day between Brisbane and Sydney. This has been expanded to cover all major Australian cities and many holiday destinations.
The timing of Virgin Blue's entry into the Australian market was fortuitous as it was able to fill the vacuum created by the failure of Ansett in September 2001. Ansett's failure allowed Virgin Blue to grow rapidly to become Australia's second domestic carrier, rather than just a cut-price alternative to the established players. It also gave them access to terminal space without which growth would have been significantly limited. Delays in negotiating access to the former Ansett terminal at Sydney Airport however forced Virgin Blue to initially use a temporary terminal there.
Virgin Group's holding in Virgin Blue has since been reduced, initially via a sale of a half interest to Australian logistics conglomerate Patrick Corporation, and later by a public float. In early 2005 Patrick launched a hostile takeover for Virgin Blue. Patrick have for some time been unhappy with the company's direction. By the closure of the offer, Patrick held 62% of the company, giving it control. Virgin Group retains a 25% share.
Virgin Blue uses a familiar formula pioneered by airlines such as Southwest Airlines and Ryanair eliminating costs such as included in-flight meals and printed tickets in favour of selling food on-board and using telephone and internet booking systems. It has also cut costs by limiting the number of airports serviced and by operating one type of aircraft, the Boeing 737.
In September 2003, Virgin Blue announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Pacific Blue, would offer a similar

Virgin
A virgin is most commonly seen as a person who has not engaged in sexual intercourse. In a stricter sense it is somebody who has not yet engaged in sexual activities (the wider this term is taken, the stricter the definition of virgin). The status of "virginity" is sometimes something that is respected and valued in societies, especially in regards to religious views of retaining one's virginity before marriage. The term maiden is also sometimes used to mean a female virgin, although that can also refer to an unmarried (rather than virginal) woman.
Among human females, the hymen is a membrane, part of the vulva, which partially occludes the entrance to the vagina and which is often physically torn when the woman first engages in vaginal intercourse. The presence of an intact membrane is therefore often seen as physical evidence of virginity in the broader technical sense. The absence of one, however, is not necessarily an indication of participation in sexual congress, since in some women the hymen is either absent from birth, or sufficiently vestigial not to be affected by sexual penetration. Conversely, in rare cases a hymen is imperforate, and as menstrual discharge cannot escape surgical intervention is required to protect the health of the woman. In modern times the hymen is often ruptured via non-sexual activities, for example the insertion of a tampon.
Traditionally, women were not regarded as virgins after a sexual assault. Some feminists disavow this notion. There are even women who take this "spiritual" conception of virginity to its maximum, considering "born again" Christians to be virgins, regardless of their past sexual conduct.
There is no obvious physical indicator of virginity in human males, though there may be social indicators, including possible sexual anxiety and a lack of sexual experience or prowess. The word "chastity" (or "celibacy," when referring to the lifestyle choice) is sometimes used for men in place of
Like A Virgin
''Like a Virgin'' (1984, see 1984 in music) was a hit album and song by Madonna. The album was #1 on Billboard Music Chart's pop albums chart and #10 on the hip hop/R&B charts.
"Like a Virgin" (the song) was Madonna's biggest hit prior to "Vogue" and her biggest hit of the 1980s. It was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, and remained the #1 hit single on the Billboard pop singles charts (US) for six straight weeks. "Like a Virgin" and "Material Girl", both from this album, are two of Madonna's most enduring and well-known songs.
Madonna has reinvented the song by singing it with different arrangements on her Blond Ambition tour and The Girlie Show. Madonna wears a wedding gown in the music video, which was directed by Mary Lambert.
The song was the subject of a famous exegesis in the opening scene of Quentin Tarantino's film, ''Reservoir Dogs''. It was also the subject of a parody by "Weird Al" Yankovic, "Like A Surgeon", and was performed by Jim Broadbent in the film ''Moulin Rouge!'' (2001) as a comic piece. A version of it, not a parody, was done by the folk singer John Wesley Harding on the album God Made Me Do It: the Christmas EP. A rare version of the song was a duet recorded by Marilyn Manson and Trent Reznor (the Nine Inch Nails frontman).
"Like A Virgin" was honored by Rolling Stone and MTV in 2000 as the #4 song on their list of the "100 Greatest Pop Songs".

A Question of Stumps
Despite being well-known and, IMHO, a pretty good song, it would seem to me that this article will never really go anywhere, and might just be better off having its guts moved over to Madonna. ''Like a Virgin'', to the best of my knowledge as a Madonna fan, doesn't really have enough of a back-story to warrant it's own article. Sure, I could crank out some articles like ROYGBIV (Boards of Canada song) or My Fair Lady ('Boogiepop Phantom' TV Episode #4), but at what point does this stop being appropriate ? - Tzaquiel 17:06 Jan 28, 2003 (UTC)
: I agree. If nobody can see how an entry will ever grow into a serious article, as opposed to a stump, its content should be merged into an appropriate parent article. That said, there seems no harm in leaving such stubs for a week or so to see if they do get expanded. Like a Virgin was only created today, so why not give it a chance? If anyone thinks it can become more than a stub, let hir prove it by doing so... Martin
::Well you could point out the ''Reservoir Dogs'' reference, and there are probably a few other things that this track has had a cultural influence on. I doubt whether before this song came out any child under 10 was ever heard to sing the word 'virgin'; with the possible exception of some refence to Queen Elizabeth I. Mintguy
:::I am no fan of Madonna, but I see some value to it, as it is now. This kind of basic info. is not bad to have. Of course, it would be better if one can add how the song was/has been received, any influence on the piece, influence of the piece on others, etc. I am no plan to familiarize myself to Madonna, but if I were, I would possibly come back to the article and find it worth reading.
