Dryer A dryer or drier most commonly means:
a clothes dryer / tumble-dryer
a hair dryer
There are also various industrial dryers for everything from wet paper to candy.
Clothes Dryer
A clothes dryer or tumble dryer (also spelt with an ''i'': ''drier'') is a major household appliance that is used to remove the residual http://wiktionary.org/wiki/moisture moisture from clothing or fabrics, generally shortly after being cleaned in a washing or washing/drying machine.
Most dryers consist of a rotating drum through which high-temperature air is circulated. The hot air removes the moisture from the fabric through evaporation. The drum is rotated relatively slowly in order to create a tumbling effect. In most cases, the drum is belt-driven by an induction motor.
There are generally two classes of dryer: electric and gas. Both of these refer to the method used to elevate the temperature of the air flowing through the drum.
Electric dryers
The electric dryer generally uses a coiled wire that is heated by using electric current. The amount of electric current is varied to adjust the air temperature.
Gas dryers
The gas dryer employs a gas burner that burns natural gas, propane or butane to form a jet of hot gases that are directed into a venturi chamber that uses the bernoulli effect to pull in ambient air so as to raise its temperature. The air temperature can be adjusted by adjusting the size of the gas flame.
Condenser dryers
Condenser dryers are ventless and can be either electric or gas. There are two types: water cooled and air cooled. Condenser dryers generally have smaller capacity and longer drying times than vented dryers. Models exist which combine a washing machine and a dryer.

Hair Dryer
A hair dryer is a electromechanical device designed to blow cool or hot air over wet or damp hair, in order to accelerate the evaporation of water particles and dry the hair. The usage of hair dryers also allows to better control the shape of the hair in the process of styling, by accelerating and controlling the formation of temporary hydrogen bonds inside the hair.
Hair dryers were invented around the end of the 19th century, being dependent on heat generation and mechanical air flow in order to be effective.
Hairstyles using hair dryers usually have volume and discipline, and can be further improved by the usage of brushes during drying to add tension, and usage of styling products.
Before the development of hairdrying, hairstyles tended to be stiff and lacking volume.

Buell Dryer The Buell dryer (also known as the turbo shelf, turbo dryer, or multi hearth dryer) is a multiple hearth direct heated dryer, commonly used in industries handling slurried minerals such as Kaolin. It's design is very similar to the Herreshoff Kiln, which is a type of flash calciner commonly used in the Kaolin mining and charcoal manufacturing industries.
The dryer itself is composed of a large upright cylindrical chamber, inside of which are 25 to 30 shelves or 'hearths'. Hot air and gasses enter the bottom of the dryer, and leave through the exhaust at the top. At the centre of the dryer is a rotating column, to which the shelves are attached. Material enters the top of the dryer and lands on the top shelf. As the shelves complete one revolution, fixed arms push the material off the top shelf, dropping it down onto the one below it. Gradually the material works it's way down through the dryer in this manner, and exits the bottom of the dryer with the assistance of fans.
Material to be dried usually enters the top of the dryer with a moisture content of around 18%, and exits as a product of around 10 to 8%. Generally these figures all depend on the dewatering processes employed before the material reaches the dryer. Commonly, the Buell dryer handles shredded filter press cakes from standard square plate filter presses.
The Buell dryer is now thought to be a relatively obsolete drying technology since the introduction of Fluid Bed dryers, Spray dryers, Pneumatic (or flash) dryers, and high pressure tube, plate, and filter presses. In many cases, even the much older alternative drying system to the Buell, the Rotary dryer, has been longer lived.
